Wovoka x Kanop: Building High-Integrity Reforestation for an Evolving Market

July 8, 2025

Wovoka has teamed up with Kanop, a remote sensing company known for its AI-models and sharp technical capabilities in carbon project monitoring, to develop a dynamic baseline for our 13,000-hectare reforestation project in Mindoro. This collaboration began with our submission to the Symbiosis Reforestation and Agroforestry RFP, which is setting a new bar for high-integrity nature-based solutions.

Kanop leverages deep learning models as well as a combination of optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) to estimate aboveground biomass across space and time. Their stocking index—validated against LiDAR and field data—helped us identify changes in forest growth and carbon removal potential. Through this partnership, we produced a credible, verifiable baseline that supports long-term monitoring, validation, and trust.

Using Symbiosis as the Standard

Symbiosis is laying out a new vision for what high-integrity reforestation looks like. It puts a premium not just on carbon, but also on biodiversity, community participation, and equitable governance. These are values we already work with on the ground, so using Symbiosis as a guiding framework makes sense.

The voluntary carbon market is moving fast. It’s becoming more rigorous, more data-driven, and more focused on co-benefits. Our approach and collaboration with Kanop is built with that direction in mind.

Refining and Expanding for Symbiosis and Beyond

Our Symbiosis submission marks the beginning of a broader effort. Our Mindoro project is now approaching the PDD stage. We’ve completed the feasibility study, and we are currently conducting field-based carbon stock measurements to support validation of the dynamic baseline, while also collaborating with NGO partners to implement community safeguards and carry out baseline biodiversity assessments. We’re refining the restoration design, strengthening implementation with local partners, and building internal systems to replicate this model in other regions.

At the same time, we’re preparing this project for buyers and funders who are aligned with the Symbiosis ethos. We’re not boxed into a single registry or route to market. We’re building a pipeline of science-backed, community-led projects that can flex with the needs of different stakeholders—whether they’re philanthropies, impact investors, or commercial offtakers.

Staying Connected to the Community of Practice

The Symbiosis Coalition RFP created a platform that brought together both project developers, technical service providers, and impact-driven investors. Through this process, we gained access to a growing network of peers and funders who share our commitment to high-integrity restoration. We're staying engaged with the coalition, sharing lessons, and learning from others doing serious work around the world.

We’re actively seeking to connect with investors and technical partners who value grounded, science-driven climate solutions. If you're committed to supporting high-integrity projects built for long-term impact, or just curious about our work with Kanop—we invite you to reach out. We’d love to connect and exchange ideas.
